“I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
The words by Emma Lazarus “I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” eternalized at the basement of the Statue of Liberty, represent the dream about the wonderful future at the new continent. Through the centuries this dream drew millions of people from all over the world to America. It strengthened the spirit and energy of the first frontiersmen. Under its charm colonization of Wild West took place. The dream about quick and easy enrichment led forward the adventurers of the gold rush.
The end point on the way to the West is California. Where if not here should we look for an answer to the question “What is America?” It’s the richest state of the USA, the dream factory, and the factory of virtual world. The image of America, as it’s viewed through the lens of modern art of San Jose, is the topic for the project of a young Russian artist Sophia Nasyrova.
Her visual images may be divided into three categories. The first group consists of colored pictures with the symbols of America: Christianity and missions, the Statue of Liberty and immigration, mass culture and Hollywood. The second group unites almost monochrome pictures where grey color and artificial constructions predominate. Urban landscapes shot at the streets of San Jose represent modern city and triumph of high technologies. The artists fill its desert inanimate space with art objects referring to nature. The third group, on a contrary, presents bucolic landscapes: cloudless sky, bright sun, flowers and art objects bringing a note of absurd to the idyll. These two types of landscape photographs represent technocratic and pastoral utopia.
Modern art of San Jose in the context of Sophia Nasyrova’s photo project is perceived as the act of deconstruction of the fundamental American myth about paradise on earth, about ideal society and harmonious man.

«I lift my lamp beside the golden door!»
Слова Эммы Лазарус, увековеченные на основании Статуи Свободы: «I lift my lamp beside the golden door!»
