Dress Tents are a fusion of architecture, the body, and the land played out through living sculpture, moving images, and still photography. Wearable architecture is installed and worn in public spaces in order to explore the geopolitics of a particular place. Dress tents encourage dialogue and raise awareness about issues involving women, land politics, displacement, and the environment. The Dress Tents project utilizes humor and seduction as a vehicle to explore the relationship between our bodies and the land.
The dress tents investigate what is up, under a women’s skirt, in the twenty-first century.
The dress tent created for Russia, Ms. Yekaterinburg: Camera Obscura Dress Tent is fashioned in ceremonial military attire. Yekaterinburg is the fourth largest city in Russia. Yet the industrial center remained closed off to the world until 1991 because of its proximity to important military sites. The tent itself is a nod to the Cold War and the secret work of closed cities while the shape of the dress tent replicates Russia’s famous onion-domed churches. A camera obscura resides inside the tent. A lens projects upside down, fleeting images of the exterior environment onto the tent’s interior walls. The camera obscura captured the formation of a new friendship whose bonds are fostered by good will; beautiful intentions and the desire to better understand each other.
The inauguration of Ms. Yekaterinburg: Camera Obscura Dress Tent took place in front of the Church-on-the-Blood where the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II and his family, were assassinated and later in history, sainted. Nina Savelyeva, winner of the Miss Yekaterinburg beauty contest, performed the dress tent in front of the church while the Ural Marching Band performed around her. Later, Irina Shipulina performed at the historic site of the Officers House, and Ksenia Zaitseva performed at the Yekaterinburg Historic Square. Additionally, the Sverdlovsk Regional Studies Museum of Culture and Natural History placed the dress tent on display in their ethnographic wing. In the U.S., Sieglinde Van Damme performed the dress tent under the glass dome at City Hall in San Jose.
